Had a go at some landscapes.   The top one I spent some time on- most of that revisiting portions of it again and again.  The ones below were more sketchy in approach. 

 The one above I knocked out in about 15 -30 minutes  and it remains  my favorite of the bunch.  What does that say?

I succumbed to the current fad of spitpainting and had a few goes. This one is from yesterday trex.  I guess it might be a good way of getting used to coming up with ideas quickly under pressure and putting things down and developing them quickly to see how they work. To be honest for me I think I would need a lot more experience for it to be of benefit.  But. They are  fun. These have been a good way of tinkering for a short time and producing something. I have been really time poor these past few weeks and this is set to be the case until Christmas.   My PC packed in so I am back on a windows Vista laptop.  Good times.  Cant wait until Christmas when I can make up for this lack of progress.

This took quite a while to finish. Lots of stuff to think about and solve.  Not all of it so successfully but I figure if it was hard I must have been learning something.  So on to the next one.

November 1st rolled around International self portrait day and I had a go again.  I completed a version on the day and posted it on conceptart.org.  Truth be told I did it at the end of the day and was exhausted so not my best effort.  I spent a little more time at the weekend to bring it to a more satisfactory state.    Self portraits are tough.

Rembrandt did a number of self portraits through his life.  They have been put together in this video.  The power of his work is in evidence as for me I get a sense of the man who painted each one of these as he experienced a rise and wane in fortunes.

Did this a while back and did not post.  This random doodling phase is throwing up all kinds of stuff or maybe just encouraging some throwing up.

 Had another go at a character.  A crack fighter pilot...nah a mountain man.  Just by coincidence I stumbled across a site Creation Nation that sells little dolls of historical figures.  The resemblance to Davey Crockett is striking.

Like a lot of the stuff I have been doing of late this was not exactly planned.  Developed from some messing around it kind of grew.  It is kind of a pity because I should have stopped and changed angle to make it more dynamic but hey ho.

Did this to practice some portraits.  Had not done any human figures in a while.  I have thought about switching over  to do some anatomy study.  Used to do it during work lunch times but since that time has disappeared I will have to make some time to get better.

The Mig study was in response to this effort.  Started out as the value study below but I started carving into it and ended up with the image above.

Practice, practice, practice.  Did this one at the weekend the reference is here.  It is a Mikoyan MiG-31.  I am afraid my time available for doing this king of stuff is going to be in short supply in the next few months.  Big project in the offing at work and I don't think I am going to avoid massive overtime. I really would prefer to spend the time getting better but I will take the hit and keep doing as much as I can and make up for lost time afterwards.

Jasper in Canada on what I remember was a very wet day.  We were reliably informed that the surrounding mountains were spectacular bit we saw ne'er a one that day.

Tried out applying the earlier  landscape study.  I did two of these at the same time (other to follow).  Spent  about 2 hours or so.

Trying out some building studies. The building is in Bucharest.  I took some shots when I was there this time last year.  Having changed job this year I wont get a chance to get away this year.  I will have to content myself with  this.

Playing around with a brush I made to put windows in buildings.  Decided to work on the image and resolve it a little bit .

A landscape study just to try out getting useful marks down quickly.  This took about 75 minutes.  I livestreamed the work .  Last Canada landscape is here (2011!) .

 Another doodle that I kept on working on.  don't think I would have been brave enough to go for this out right.  really tough getting horses to approach recognisable. Will do a study next to recover.

When I am doing the longer pieces I break it up doing some sketches and doodles and short studies .  I know I should be doing more of this but day work makes it really difficult to just do some loose stuff and I have wanted to do more finished work.  May try and flip those priorities  for a while.

For a change I started this image out with a line drawing working out most of the details. Then value.  The image below is where I was at before I went in with colour.    I changed some of the poses a bit later on.

This was the next lesson of Suzanne Helmighs  following on from the skulls. To be honest I would need a lot more practice at this but I can see how this would be really useful.
