A quick study.  Something I have not had time to do in a while.  I was really busy combined with a hard drive failure meant there is not a lot I have to share this week.
Below are a smattering of character sketches I did during the character design sprint I did in August.  All were from D&D prompts.

Another week and more ink studies and its Inktober.  I am just about able to keep up with these so I am going to forgo the Inktober prompts and keep going with the themed studies. This is almost the last of the landscapes.  I am switching over to vehicles - my least practiced theme.

Still deep in bigger projects.  Progress is slow. Here are some more landscape sketches.  Sticking to routine of prompt and working on them for about 30 minutes.  Lots of buildings here.  Next task to practice cleaner lines when executing these.

Ocean

Ocean

A lot of work this week but work is still in progress.  Above is a study prompt from Bjorn Hurris' stream.  Tried to give the sense of light and dark.  It kind of follows on from the previous study.
Below is a work in progress.  Really stretching on this one so we will see how it turns out.  There have been a few modifications of this draft but the overall composition remains the same.

Landscape practicing

After RuoLi
This is a selection of landscape sketches.  They are about 30 minutes each done with pen and ink in response to a random prompt.  This is to practice getting landscape ideas down.  I will start to work on composition and values.

The last is a copy of an oil painting After RuoLi who manages to create amazing textures. It was interesting to do something like this after concentrating on working with linework for so long.  It was done just by painting.

So a week of probably the most diverse set of arty activities in a while.  This month is about trying stuff out of my comfort zone and doing studies which it turn out is hard work.  I started a lot of projects these are some I finished so far.

Snake in the water

Snake in the water
Snake in the water
Sort of random one this week.  Did a lot of studies so to do something that didn't require too much effort  I did this.  It started with a  screengrab then painted over. I am going to work on studies for September and to keep me honest I plan to stream on Twitch.  I will be under this name so stop by and say hello.

Had to finish this one up before I left for Industry Workshops.  Another character requested by smrvl.  It stayed pretty close to the sketch but I think the sketch is a bit more moody.  The maps are based on some 17th and 18th century real maps -  beautiful to look at.
That is it for full on characters for now.  I will keep working on them but I want to shift focus to environments and work on a process for them.
I was at Industry workshops at the weekend which definitely gave me some food for thought.  I will share some of what was on show in a later post.

Late posting cos this one was a battle.  The request was  for a Goliath paladin by grandbaby-buffalo.  The sketch was but the first step.  Spent a long time messing with the goat.  Could still be more menacing.

Swashbuckler

Swashbuckler
Barbarian Fairy

Barbarian Fairy sketch
Swashbuckler sketch
Still working on the characters. Barbarian fairy was done for vicar1492.  The sketches are done roughly in half an hour.  After that it lines flat colour and shading.  If I need to render further I would do a value pass - greyscale then colour and soft light layers. I may bring the swashbuckler character further but I still have a backlog of sketches.  For now I will keep working on this process.

More D&D characters

Hedgehog Paladin

 Jakoby Stauss - Fighter

I worked on more D&D characters this week.  I am developing a bit of a backlog though.  I thought I would get through more work.  The hedgehog I worked on detailing and moving from flat colouring to rendering without lines takes quite a while but I think I can change the process to move things along.  This was done for vicar1492 . The fighter I stopped just before more  rendering. This was done for Tusklord
I will keep working on a few more of these.

Borg the Orc

Borg the Orc

Took some of the sketches from last week and have being working them up.  I am working off prompts from Reddit . Sam Peterson used in in an earlier Art Posse challenge.  I didnt take part but the character prompts are great and there are lots to choose from.  I had hoped to have a second one finished by now but still needs some work.
So this moved from traditional sketch to coloured lineart  then to a render in greyscale.  This character was from ChuddStudly.
