These are ogham stones. These ancient stones carry words in the form of markings scored into their edges. The scored patterns are an alphabet. They are found all over Ireland. They are not usually in a circle. The circular mounds sometimes marked with stones are referred to as fairy forts in folklore and are considered magical. In truth they are the remains of ring forts.
